The evolving international landscape invites renewed reflection on how we advance peace, stability and shared prosperity. Geopolitical competition, protracted conflicts, climate impacts, economic interdependence and technological change are shaping both opportunities and risks. Their effects intersect in people¡¯s lives, with implications for livelihoods, social cohesion and well-being. Addressing these challenges calls for closer attention to the connections between global developments and the social, economic and environmental conditions that shape people¡¯s experiences. Human security offers a framework for understanding these connections and supporting responses across peace, development and humanitarian action that reflect people¡¯s needs, priorities and capacities.
Against this backdrop, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) will convene the roundtable ¡°Security for Whom? Reaffirming a Human-Centered Approach in a Time of Global Rupture: Regional Perspectives¡± at the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development on 3 November 2026, from 14:00 to 15:15 in Stockholm.
Building on Human Security Dialogues held across Europe over the past year, the session will bring together perspectives from Africa, the Arab region, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants will examine how interconnected challenges are experienced across regions, what prevailing approaches may overlook, and how a human security lens can sharpen policy choices amid constrained resources and a more fragmented multilateral environment. The discussion will connect these perspectives to practical questions, including how human security can strengthen prevention, priority-setting, and partnerships while keeping people¡¯s needs, priorities and capacities at the centre of policy choices.
SIPRI Deputy Director Charlotta Sparre will open the session, with reflections from Ambassador Knut Vollebaek, Chair of the Advisory Board on Human Security, on the Human Security Dialogues in Europe. Dr. Shuvai Busuman Nyoni, Executive Director of the African Leadership Centre will moderate an interactive exchange with Dr. Raymond Gilpin, UNDP, Mr. Khaled Emam, Arab Leadership Institute, Dr. Marcelo E. Korc, PAHO/WHO, Yuko Mitsui of JICA and members of the SIPRI Youth Advisory Board.
