24 December 2025/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n
GAZA, The Occupied Palestinian Territory /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2014/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0When Rana learned she was pregnant, her joy was quickly overshadowed by another feeling /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2013 fear./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n For Rana, as for many of the/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a055,000 pregnant women/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0across Gaza seeking healthcare, the question was not if her baby would be born but where, and whether they would survive the delivery. /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201cI thought I would have to give birth in a tent,/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201d she recalled./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n After two years of relentless attacks, Gaza/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s health system has been shattered. Only a/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0fraction of health facilities/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0remain functional, and very few can provide emergency obstetric and newborn care. Health workers have been displaced, medicines are scarce, and neonatal units are overwhelmed, operating far beyond capacity with too few incubators and trained staff./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201cAs my due date approached, I was terrified. I didn/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019t know how I could bring a child into this world under these conditions,/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201d she told UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, which is the UN/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s sexual and reproductive health agency./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n Like most of Gaza/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s 2.1 million residents, Rana is displaced, living in a makeshift tent, exposed to/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0severe winter conditions/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0and heavy rains. Recent flooding has washed away shelters, destroyed belongings, and left families cold, soaked and prone to disease, with the risks of respiratory infections, diarrhoea, hepatitis and hypothermia increasing sharply./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n Pregnant women, new mothers and newborns are among those most in danger, as tragically witnessed in Khan Younis, where a two-week-old baby recently/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0died from hypothermia./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n Midwife Nabila Masaoud provides maternal and newborn care at the Patient/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s Friends Benevolent Society Hospital in Gaza City. /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a9 UNFPA Palestine/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987//Hardy Skills/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n A lifeline when it mattered most/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n At a moment when Gaza/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s health system has stretched beyond its limits, trained midwives and functioning health facilities are crucial in ensuring women and babies survive childbirth and the delicate post-partum period./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n For Rana, this meant being able to give birth not in a flooded tent, but in a functional hospital, surrounded by health workers and with the equipment needed for a safe delivery./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n Thankfully she was able to give birth in the Patient/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s Friends Benevolent Society Hospital in Gaza City. This hospital, along with Al Khair Hospital in Khan Younis, was recently fully rehabilitated through UNFPA support and with funding from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief)./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n Rana/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019s sister walks between rows of tents in a camp for people who have been displaced in Gaza City. /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a9 UNFPA Palestine/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987//Hardy Skills/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n At the hospital, midwife Nabila Masaoud was with Rana throughout her labour. She described how precarious conditions were before the facility was rehabilitated. /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201cThere were very few health workers, and much of the equipment had been damaged,/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201d she told UNFPA./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201cIf a woman developed complications during childbirth, there was a real risk she wouldn/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u2019t survive. This support changed that. We were able to bring health workers back, cover their salaries, and replace equipment we had lost during the war./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201d/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n These and other initiatives have delivered immediate results for women and girls most in need in Gaza, some 240,000 of whom have already accessed essential reproductive health services, including family planning and maternal healthcare, with many more expected to be reached./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n /unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201cEvery woman deserves a safe delivery,/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u201d said midwife Nabila./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n The fight for a first breath/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n With fewer than/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a02,000 hospital beds for over 2 million/unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/u00a0people in Gaza and ventilators for newborns in short supply, premature babies share cots and incubators, the tubes and monitors that keep them alive running on unstable electricity./unispal/wp-json/wp/v2/document/313987/n
